A total of 22 SASI-ONE Awards (SASI = Shop America Salutes Innovation) for shopping and cultural tourism marketing excellence were presented at the SASI-ONE Awards Breakfast Tuesday, January 17, 2012 during the ONE Travel Conference at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. The awards are sponsored by CenterCal Properties in partnership with Shop America Alliance and the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council. Brandace Bruning, with CenterCal Properties is the SASI-ONE Awards Chairperson Along with the 8 SASI-ONE Gold Awards and 9 SASI-ONE Merit Awards for shopping and cultural tourism marketing excellence, 5 SASI-ONE Special Award Recipients were honored in the categories of Shopping Tourism Retailer of the Year, TravMedia Tourism Journalist of the Year, Cultural & Heritage Tourism Destination of the Year, Cultural Traveler Trailblazer Award and SASI-ONE Chairman’s Award. The achievements of SASI-ONE winners from throughout the USA, Mexico and Latin America and the winners of the special awards were showcased in a video presentation. “SASI-ONE Awards recognize prominent leaders in the tourism industry for their vision and commitment to developing shopping and cultural tourism. This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate their creativity and marketing success,” said Rosemary McCormick, President of Shop America Alliance and Co-Producer of the ONE Travel Conference. The 8 SASI-ONE WINNERS and 9 SASI-ONE Merit Awards were judged by a committee coordinated by the Bloomington, Minnesota Convention and Visitors Bureau. The judges were Jan Kroells, Bloomington Minnesota Convention & Visitors Bureau, Doug Killian, Mall of America, Gayle Junnila and Lana Sloane, Explore Minnesota, Cathleen Orlson, Colours Marketing and Design and Scott Bolin, Bolin Marketing. Victoria Secret was the recipient of the Shopping Tourism Retailer of the Year award. The special award recognizing Victoria Secret’s success in marketing to tourists is sponsored by American Express, TaxFree Shopping Ltd. and Shop America Alliance. The award was presented by Carolyn Petty, President of TaxFree Shopping Ltd. Winner of the TravMedia Tourism Journalist of the Year award was Mary Moore Mason, an award-winning editor with Essentially America Magazine in the UK. Mason has been editor/editorial director of the magazine since its launch in 1994 as the UK’s only consumer magazine exclusively devoted to North American travel and lifestyle. She has been the recipient of many awards including the top travel destination consumer article award in the Discover America competition at the International Pow Wow 2011 convention. She also writes under the name of Sally Montgomery. The travel journalist award is sponsored by TravMedia, an international news distribution service company and was presented by the CEO, Nick Wayland. Biltmore, a national historic landmark with America’s largest home in Asheville, North Carolina was honored as the Cultural & Heritage Tourism Destination of the Year, in recognition of its leadership, marketing creativity and dedication to promoting cultural and heritage tourism. The Cultural & Heritage Tourism Alliance and the US Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council co-sponsored this prestigious award. Richard Peterson, Director of Travel Industry Sales for the California Academy of Sciences, recipient of last year’s award, presented the award to Biltmore. The Cultural & Heritage Trailblazer Award was awarded to Bob Klemme of Enid, Oklahoma for his significant contribution in preserving history and culture in identifying and marketing the Chisholm Trail throughout Oklahoma. He single-handedly constructed and placed over 400 seven-foot tall concrete roadside markers weighing 200 pounds each to create interest in the Chisholm Trail in the hope that it will be named a National Historic Trail. The award is sponsored by the US Cultural & Heritage Tourism Council and was presented by Berkeley Young of Young Strategies, Inc. Brandace Bruning, the SASI-ONE Awards Chairperson, selects the SASI-ONE Chairman’s Choice Award to an advertising and/or public relations initiative that exemplifies over the top creativity. This year’s Chairman’s Choice Award recognizes a French mineral water brand, Contrex, for “Contrexprience,” a TV Commercial that pedaled its way to the top of the rankings by making losing weight look fun!
